Here’s what you can expect when you visit our office for a dental cleaning.

Dentist MississaugaA Physical Exam

The first step of a cleaning is an exam of your whole mouth, including the teeth, gums, and even the cheeks and jaw bone. Using a small mirror, the hygienist will look closely for any signs of gingivitis or other conditions. If everything is healthy, they’ll continue with the cleaning.

Removing Plaque and Tartar

This is typically the most uncomfortable part of the cleaning, but we urge you to let your hygienist know if you need them to stop or pause. Using a scaler, the hygienist will scrape away at plaque and tartar that has built up around your gum line. Tartar, which is plaque that has hardened, can only be removed at the dentist office, so make sure you’re regularly brushing and flossing to prevent tartar from forming.

Toothpaste Cleaning

Next, your teeth will get a thorough cleaning using a small electric brush. The toothpaste that is used is stronger than the standard toothpaste you have at home, this will ensure that any remaining tartar and plaque is removed from your teeth.

Flossing

We want to make sure that every side of your teeth are thoroughly cleaned. A professional flossing will make sure that the inside edge of your teeth get some attention.

During each of these steps, the hygienist will occasionally rinse out your mouth, feel free to take your time and swish the water around before it’s sucked up. And now your dental cleaning is complete!
